Understanding Ferrule Fittings: A Complete Guide by PE-LOCK

Ferrule fittings are essential components in fluid and gas systems, ensuring leak-proof, vibration-resistant, and reliable connections across a wide range of industries. Whether you’re working with compressed gases, chemicals, steam, or cleanroom fluids, understanding how ferrule fittings work—and how to select and install them properly—is critical.

In this guide from Perfect Engineers, we explain everything you need to know about ferrule fittings, their types, materials, working principles, applications, and best practices.

What Are Ferrule Fittings?

Ferrule fittings, also called compression fittings, are mechanical connectors used to join tubes in fluid systems. They provide a metal-to-metal seal using one or two ferrule rings compressed between a nut and the fitting body.

When properly installed, ferrule fittings offer leak-tight, high-pressure, and corrosion-resistant performance without welding or threading the tube.

How Do Ferrule Fittings Work?

Ferrule fittings function using a three-part mechanism:

  1. Fitting Body – Holds the tube and ferrules in position.
  2. Ferrules – One (single ferrule) or two (double ferrule) rings that compress and grip the tube.
  3. Nut – Tightened over the body to swage the ferrules onto the tubing.

When the nut is tightened, the front ferrule creates the seal while the back ferrule grips the tube. This dual action ensures vibration resistance and prevents tube blowout.

Key Benefits of PE-LOCK Ferrule Fittings

  1. Leak-proof sealing up to 10,000 PSI

How to Install Ferrule Fittings

Step-by-Step:

  1. Cut the tube square with a cutter
  2. Deburr inside and outside edges
  3. Slide nut and ferrules onto the tube
  4. Insert tube into the fitting body until fully seated
  5. Tighten nut 1-1/4 turns from finger-tight (initial install)
  6. Always mark the nut and body to monitor the correct rotation
  7. Use torque guidelines to avoid over-tightening or under-sealing

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Under-tightening or over-tightening the nut
  • Not fully inserting the tube
  • Using bent or scratched tubing
  • Reusing damaged ferrules
  • Mixing brands of fitting components
