Common Issues & Troubleshooting | Needle Valves – Perfect Engineers

  1. Leakage at Threads or Compression Ends

Symptoms:

  • Visible fluid/gas leaking from the threaded or tube end
  • Pressure drop in system

Causes:

  • Improper sealing (no PTFE tape/sealant)
  • Cross-threaded or over-tightened connection
  • Worn or reused ferrules (compression valves)

Fixes:
Remove and re-install with PTFE tape/sealant
Replace ferrules with new, OEM-approved parts
Avoid overtightening—apply correct torque

  1. Stem is Hard to Turn / Stuck

Symptoms:

  • Valve stem doesn’t rotate smoothly
  • Feels jammed, even with a wrench

Causes:

  • Dirt or debris in stem threads
  • Corrosion due to lack of lubrication or harsh environment
  • Overtightening during previous use

Fixes:
Clean stem and apply valve-grade lubrican
Replace corroded parts if needed
Always close the valve gently, not forcefully

Table of Contents

  1. Valve Doesn’t Shut Off Completely

Symptoms:

  • Fluid continues to leak or drip when valve is “fully closed”
  • Seat doesn’t seal properly

Causes:

  • Damaged seat or needle tip
  • Foreign particles stuck in seat
  • Excessive wear from throttling with poor quality media

Fixes:
Disassemble and inspect seat/needle
Clean with mild solvent and non-metallic brush
Replace damaged internal components (use OEM parts)

  1. Excessive Pressure Drop Across Valve

Symptoms:

  • Reduced downstream pressure
  • Low flow rate despite valve being open

Causes:

  • Orifice too small for the application
  • Incorrect Cv selected during valve sizing
  • Obstruction inside valve port

Fixes:
Check valve sizing—replace with correct Cv valve
Flush valve system and clean obstruction
Consult Perfect Engineers for flow optimization

  1. Valve Oscillates / Makes Noise

Symptoms:

  • Vibrating or whistling sound during flow
  • Pressure fluctuation across valve

Causes:

  • Cavitation or turbulence in partially open position
  • Gas passing at high velocity through small port

Fixes:
Do not throttle at high-pressure drop points
Use multiple-stage control or install pressure regulators upstream

  1. Corrosion or Rust on Body/Stem

Symptoms:

  • Pitting, discoloration, flaking metal
  • Difficulty operating the valve

Causes:

  • Incorrect material for media (e.g., using brass in acidic service)
  • Harsh outdoor/chemical environment

Fixes:
Replace with corrosion-resistant grade (e.g., SS 316, Monel, Hastelloy)
Use protective coatings or enclosure box for harsh environments
