In a ball valve, the seat refers to the ring that forms a seal between the ball and valve body, while seals (gaskets or O-rings) prevent leakage through the stem and body joints. Together, they:

No—EPDM breaks down in oils. Use Viton or RPTFE instead.
Yes—graphite provides tight shut-off under extreme heat and is fire-safe.
In abrasive, slurry, or high-temperature services, metal seats outperform soft seats.
Only for low-pressure steam. For high-pressure or high-temp, use graphite or metal seats.
