In any ball valve, the stem is the critical component that connects the handle or actuator to the ball inside the valve. It transmits motion, supports rotation, and ensures leak-proof operation. At Perfect Engineers, we manufacture and supply ball valves with high-precision stems made from Brass, Stainless Steel (SS304/SS316), and Carbon Steel (CS)—carefully selected to withstand pressure, torque, and media exposure in diverse industries.
From plumbing systems to chemical process plants, choosing the right stem material ensures reliable sealing, smooth operation, and long-term durability under demanding conditions.
The stem is the shaft that transmits rotational torque from the valve handle or actuator to the ball. It extends through the valve body and bonnet, making it a crucial sealing point that must withstand:
Material | Corrosion Resistance | Max Temp | Ideal Applications |
Brass | Medium | ~120°C | Potable water, air, light-duty gas |
SS304 | High | ~400°C | Food, pharma, water, non-aggressive chemicals |
SS316 | Very High | ~400°C | Acids, solvents, chlorides, steam |
Carbon Steel (A105) | Low to Medium | ~425°C | Oil, fuel, gas, thermal fluids (non-corrosive) |
Application Area | Recommended Stem Material |
Domestic water & plumbing | Brass |
Industrial water/steam lines | SS304 or Carbon Steel |
Chemical & acid dosing systems | SS316 or Hastelloy |
Fire-safe fuel lines | Carbon Steel (fire-safe rated) |
Pharma, food-grade applications | Electropolished SS316L |
HVAC chilled/hot water systems | Brass or SS304 |

It prevents the stem from being ejected under internal pressure—especially critical in high-pressure or gas systems.
Only up to around 120°C. For steam or hot oil, use SS316 or CS instead.
Yes—for corrosive or marine environments, SS316 is preferred due to its molybdenum content offering better corrosion resistance.
Yes—CS stems with graphite packing and metal backup seals can withstand API 607 fire-safe requirements.
Absolutely—our ISO 5211 stems are designed for automated valve mounting (pneumatic/electric).
